At Eurobike in Friedrichshafen on Lake Costanza, this year the HERO presented a virtual reality ride to the public. All the thrills, emotion, sounds, images, and even vibrations of the race itself.
During the 5 days of the fair, it was possible to experience the highs and lows of what is the toughest mountain bike race in the world: Südtirol Dolomites. It was a chance to try, through a virtual reality experience, what it is really like to bike across the most beautiful mountains in the world when competing in the race which all pros and amateurs regard as a must in their biking year.
«There are millions of videos which attempt to show the excitement of races and places but this is not enough for us at the HERO, for we want to show off all the elements which go into making this race not only the toughest the world has to offer but something much more as a complete experience».
Gerhard Vanzi, founder of the HERO Südtirol Dolomites.
How it works: It is not a simulator but a real active experience: wearing a VR Mask the person gets on the bike and sets off! «HERO VR 4D LIVE Experience is an experimental virtual reality installation allowing the person to get on a mountain bike fixed to a platform and immerse oneself in a total race experience – observing, listening to, feeling and pedalling as if in the race itself – it is a personal HERO experience».
SEE: Filmed at 360 degrees you can look around just like in real life, without obstructed vision
LISTEN: to the sounds of the race as recorded during the race with a surround microphone
FEEL: the impact of the wind as it oscillates depending on the speed at any particular moment along the race route
PEDAL: increasing and reducing the physical effort depending on the gradient of the terrain.
